Consumer Spending Defies the Forecasters, Again
Households continue to open their wallets even as savings rates fall to multi-year lows.

For the third consecutive quarter, American consumer spending has outpaced the forecasts of professional economists. Retail sales rose nine-tenths of a percent in April, with strength concentrated in services and discretionary categories.
